Unfortunately, his condition quickly declined, and after a week, it became clear that he needed hospice care instead. Despite this, our experience at Medicana was nothing short of exceptional. The staff at Medicana were attentive, professional, and, most importantly, compassionate. They treated my father with dignity and respect, ensuring that he was as comfortable as possible during his stay. Even though he was unable to fully participate in rehab activities, the caregivers remained patient and supportive, always checking in on him and addressing his needs with kindness. What stood out the most was the warmth and empathy of the entire team. They not only cared for my father but also provided reassurance and guidance to our family during a very difficult time. Their dedication and humanity made all the difference, and for that, we are truly grateful. While our journey took an unexpected turn, I would wholeheartedly recommend Medicana to anyone in need of rehabilitation services. Their commitment to quality care and their genuine concern for their patients and families make them an outstanding choice. I worked there almost 3 years before being forced to quit for a policy that was in place but I never knew about! I started off PRN and eventually went full time. My administrator and DON moved on so new people came in. The DON and 2 unit managers were GREAT TO WORK WITH! The administrator Tamia Jones is the rudest and most unprofessional lady I’ve ever met. I was out in FMLA this place tried to get rid of me while on leave. When I came back light duty they had already given my position to someone else and for more pay than I was offered!! While out I planned to go to a funeral not really knowing when I would be able to go back to work (I had been in a car accident that messed my back up pretty bad). Upon coming back I was told I was to either cancel a trip that was paid for or quit. So I quit!! No compassion no nothing! Fake behind don’t care about the staff OR RESIDENTS. My father-in-law was sent there for therapy to get him walking again with his walker which was accomplished in approximately 3 days. During his 7 day stay my father-in-law stated he never saw a medical doctor once. We threatened to pull him out of there on the 6th day of his stay because earlier the nursing staff said that a doctor would see him on a Wednesday (7th day) but then the social worker said a doctor would not be in till Friday (which would have been the 9th day). Once we threatened to pull him out on Tuesday they all of a sudden begged us to stay till Wednesday again that doctor would be there then. When we arrived Wednesday morning my father-in-law stated the doctor hadn’t been in yet. After a short wait I just checked with director of nursing on what time the doctor arrives. She saw us walk in and made no effort to come to his room and inform us that the doctor had been there and deemed my father-in-law medically unstable to discharge contradicting what my father-in-law stated about not seeing the doctor yet. I feel at this time my father-in-law was alert and in competent mental capacity that he was telling us the truth about not seeing the doctor. I am assuming we would have waited all day for them to tell us so we could continue to be billed for unnecessary medical treatment in our opinion based on that what he was sent in there for was resolved within 3 day. In my opinion this facility is very much in the business of only making a profit as I notice there was a number of beds empty which in my experience is very unusual for a nursing home. If you send a loved one there permanently I would highly recommend this facility. If you are sending a loved one there for minor rehab then plan on being there for a long, possibly unnecessary extended stay to support their profit objectives. That is what tricked me into feeling good about taking my dad there. My dad was there because no other facility would take him with Covid when he was discharged from the hospital. They told us to head over to get dad settled in. So pleasant and sweet from the sales side. We showed up and there was no room wating for him. They were surprised to see us. My dad had to sit in a crowded hallway slumped over in his wheelchair for more than an hour while they began to move people around so he can have a room. They knew we were headed there and did nothing. The remainder of his stay was no less than a nightmare that seemed to get worse as time went on. In rehab, they turned their back on him knowing he mind was not right, to work on a computer and he stood up and fell. Medications lists were not being processed and we had to make it happen with multiple complaints. Complain to the head nurse and watch him literally make "stuff" up to explain lecture style why his staff doesn't do what they should. He's a gem. Push a call button and see what happens. Nothing! Need help going to the bathroom, don't hold your breath. We had to hire private aids to keep dad safe as they could not. Don't let them fool you with their sales pitch, this is not a good place to send a loved one unless there is no other choice. Let's not even talk about the awful food or how filthy the outdoor area was. Or the screaming of mentally ill patients for hours. If you do go there, be prepared to fight for everything your loved one needs. You should know, they may tell you that you will get a single or double room. But you could just as easlily end up in a 6 bed dormatory style room. One TV and 1 toilet for 6 beds. Even if you start in a single or double, they can move you at their discretion to a 6 bed. Know that single and double rooms have as many as four patients that share one toilet. You should know that the rooms are tiny and the beds too. I could go on and on, but this is the reality of this place. I'm not saying that some of the staff didn't try, but they are overwhelmed and understaffed like all places. Just to get a cup of water or ice was always a challenge. Good luck. The food portions were designed for a squirrel. The rooms were not very clean. The staff that I was unlucky enough to interact with were either dismissive, robotic, confrontational or completely uncommunicative due to language barriers. One awful woman in Social Services actually hollered at me for lodging a complaint! I am so surprised this "rehab" has not been closed down for bug infestations ( there were ants climbing up my wall), unsanitary conditions ( my sheets were changed once in 10 days) or numerous other reasons. Their Google reviews are all 5's. Not sure how that is even remotely possible. Why an inspector has not taken their license yet is unthinkable. I am not over the pain, suffering and utter disregard that I was subjected to. I don't think I ever will be. Don't expose your loved ones to this place. I wouldn't send my worst enemy there. She was physically healthy in her 80's. She had Alzheimers and the personality changes were stubbornness otherwise she remained sweet and agreeable. Her decline was fast and very sad. We (I and her husband who had dementia) had a number of concerns all of which management were quick to assure us would be looked at and improved but they never were! Issues were her constant falling out of chairs or her bed, neglect of her needs and of her belongings, lack of care fulness which caused a fall, and general unhygienic conditions. In the common room they only had dining chairs (no big comfortable lean back chairs) and she continually fell out of them . They always, as far as I know called us to report said accidents, but the only remedy they had was to try to get her to her room to lay down if they happened to see her sleeping in said chair. She also fell out of bed a number of times . The mattress of the bed was old and lumpy. Her personal hygiene was not looked after. We often arrived and her hair was uncombed. Her nails were never cut unless I did this myself which I often did. Dirty diapers were found and reported in the hallway at least twice. She developed many sores which were only looked after somewhat, after we complained. Medication was not prescribed nor did she see a Doctor for these sores. Her personal belongings often disappeared and were never found despite being labeled. Her clothing was marked with huge black magic markers rather than name tags and took over a month to get marked. Her closet was always in disaray only after a few days of my organizing it, with clothing missing, general items used for everyone or items not being used like padding stuffed in her closet. Her neighbour who had no relatives and was incapacitated had her clothing in bags pushed into her own closet. Staff rarely spoke to my friend. She stopped eating for which they did nothing, and though I often asked them to cut her meat I often arrived when she was eating, to find this not done. It was easier to deliver her meals to her bedside than incorporate her in the dining room so it was up to us to take her there when we could. Rarely would they take her for the planned events and only occasionally when we requested a specific event. I observed other, severely handicapped and Alzheimer patients neglected and staff not trained in how to effectively help them. The very basics were done for them but some staff had time to sit by an outside door on their phones. Staff did not seem sufficiently trained, financially or otherwise motivated to care about the patients. If I had had the authority she would not have remained there. I actively attempted to have her power of attorney agree to move her, but there were always false promises they would improve care. As she was dying, before we could get there, they promised to hold her hand but they didn't do much for her when she was alive. [review] => During COVID with no chance of visiting a facility before a loved one in admitted, my father was taken there on a Wednesday night where we had to prove that he was vaccinated and COVID free. It was near impossible to get him on the phone, only to find out that the rooms did not have private phones and they were bringing portable phones between patients. On Saturday I was finally able to speak with him and I knew he needed help. I begged the nurse for him to see a doctor and was told that he only needed to rest and that she was the professional. I asked to speak with an administrator and was told to call on Monday. On Monday my husband went in person and spoke with the director and the head nurse both told him that dad would see a doctor. Later a voicemail informed us that there were no orders on file for a doctor. Tuesday morning dad was transported to JFK where a doctor told us he got there too late to be revived. He went to Hospice over night and died the next day. This facility neglected to get the help our dad needed and also he was robbed of a necklace that he was wearing when he was admitted. PS he also tested positive for COVID at JFK, Medicana denies that he had it when he was there. Medicana smells to high heaven of urine no matter what time of day you are there. The standard answer to every issue you point out to them is "We didn't know". A resident fell on the floor outside of my mom's room the other day because there was absolutely no caregiver, no nurse, no one on the hall. The first day I went to visit my mom, they had an ear PLUG in her left ear and did not have her hearing aid in her right ear at all. They will not get my mom out of bed to use the potty-they make her urinate and defecate in her depends. I have no idea how long she is left to lay in her own waste. They will not get her out of bed at all and during the times I've been to visit her, they don't even come in and change her . position. She shares a room with three other women. Some of the staff members are very kind but some of them are just downright rude! I've never seen any activities for the residents except for a bingo game one time in the dining hall. Most of them are just sitting in the hallways in their wheelchairs. Do not bring your loved ones to this facility! As my best friend and I walked in we noticed what appeared to be a quarrel going on between a heavyset bad Widged. Bahamian woman, who appear to be the manager but had no sense on how to talk to her poor employee because she was scolding him in front of everyone else and belittling him. When my best friend and I observed we immediately left because this is not how I would want my grandpa to be treated his final days out. [review] => It took me just over a year to write this review because I'm literally traumatized by what they did to my parent. The rehab staff was good. The CARE staff was neglectful. A few exceptions, but mostly awful. Sundays are the worst with no administrative staff to watch over them at all. My parent was totally neglected and even another main staff member whispered in my ear to move her to another facility, that he was being neglected. If your loved one is not totally mobile and able to speak up for themselves, then RUN from this very old, very HOT building (such poor AC) of doom. After an ER trip discovered c-diff, upon return to this center they literally left my parent alone in a room with the door shut all day with no AC and a sign that he was contagious, which prevented others from going in to hydrate him (He was unable to hydrate on his own or use a call button). It was a Sunday and no one questioned this sign. Thank goodness we went to visit. It has been eight hours since he had been transported back and no one had been in the room. Complaining, crying, on your knees to the director does no good as they can't babysit their staff 24/7. If you don't have great insurance you get stuck with a place like this. I should have installed secret security cameras. It was that bad. I could go on for an hour listing offenses. There were no openings at other centers, that's why my parent stayed. Others seemed just as bad. At least here the rehab staff was good and for that I'm grateful. This whole system in this country is so so sad. My parent was treated like an object. I've seen stuffed animals get more love and care. With a few exceptions .. a select few decent workers who also confided to me that they cared but most did not. They were also sickened at the poor care. the turnover there was high. Even the director left. when the remaining decent employees confide in you that it's so bad that they, too, are leaving .. you know this is an unstable environment. My parent was dehydrated. Had a swollen leg twice the width of the other that no one noticed. We walked in and saw it and could not believe it. Doctor not called in until the next day and ultra sound didn't come for yet another day and it was a blood clot. only a doctor can order a test or a medication. Gross negligence. Blood in urine noticed. Mandatory elevation (choke risk) and was consistently not elevated upon our arrival. We were on guard all of the time and felt like we could never leave. I've never been through anything like that in my life and literally have ptsd from this horrific experience. There are many more things I could name. Once he was dropped. Bed sores not reported, one to the bone. I have to stop. It's too much for me. But this place is in my nightmares. Sadly I get told that this is not uncommon. ?? Some of these people should be arrested. This should not be common. Find a place with cameras in the rooms. You don't want anyone that you love to be subjected to this place. Even a neighbor was here 9 years ago and said it was awful. Some things don't change. My wife spent 5 weeks as a resident at Medicana following a near fatal illness and confinement at a local hospital. She was not expected to live upon her arrival at the Emergency Room. What I wish I knew and want to inform others of: the overall star ratings awarded can be changed by filing grievances on the Agency fo Healthcare, http://ahca.myflorida.com/ Our experience: Some of the nurses are very good and attentive, but overall, even though my mother was bedridden, the nurses didn't see her. The aids do. I can't tell you how many times things were amiss and our answer from the staff was "we didn't know". There is no one to give you answers. Everyone refers you to someone else. We've been out right lied to on more than one occasion. The therapists are great. I believe they do a good job and genuinely care about their patients. Eventually he got close to his benefits running out. My father told my mother something was not right with him. My mother pleaded with this place to send my father back to the hospital. They did not want to listen to her. She called the insurance company and told them what was going on and that she felt they were holding him there because there were still 4 days left insurance would cover. My mother was instructed to let them know she would call 911 if they did not send him to the hospital. They finally agreed. My father went back to the hospital where they found internal bleeding and the need for a blood transfusion.
